Who We Are

Anarres formed as a worker coop in 2003. Based in Toronto, we have a network of associates and partners with whom we have worked extensively over the last 7 years. We came together because we believe computer technology and the web should primarily be tools for community building. We are passionate about using opensource software for reasons of both utility and ethics. We believe in its affordability, flexibility and effectiveness.

Anarres understands the needs of social justice organizations, labour and the non-profit sector. We are activists and social advocates in our own right, and we strive to bring this aspect of ourselves to our work as much as we do our technical competence and experience. We have worked for a large number of organizations, with a focus on building solid and effective websites for an increasingly web-savvy non-profit sector.

What We Use

Anarres favours the use of content management systems (CMS), web site software which allows an individual or community of users to easily create, publish, edit, manage, comment on and organize a variety of dynamic content using very flexible tools. Anarres has extensive experience with the Drupal CMS. For the website maintainer, such as your staff, the main advantages of a Drupal-based site are:

  • fast and easy updating (virtually no computer language knowledge required)
  • streamlined authoring process
  • faster turnaround time for new pages and changes
  • improved site navigation
  • increased site flexibility
  • support for decentralized authoring
  • reduced duplication of information
  • greater capacity for growth
  • reduced site maintenance costs
For the users of a Drupal-based website, a big advantage is the level of interactivity it creates. Because the content is dynamically generated, we have the possibility of creating a variety of mechanisms by which people using your site can provide feedback through polls and commenting, or even submit their own content for consideration to be published on the site (stories, articles, questions). Finally, a content management system provides tools for community building through participatory communication.
